MassachusettsCoffee Shop Offers Great Coffee a Chance at Better Life

Batian Peak, a coffee and tea shop in Billerica, Massachusetts, doesn't just provide great coffee to its customers; it's providing a chance at a new life for villagers and AIDS victims in Kenya by using Kenya-raised coffee beans and then contributing a portion of its sales profits to S.A.F.I., a foundation that aims to help young people affected by the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

Husband-and-wife owners Peter Kagunye and Roseanne Kamau - who were recently featured in the Sun Chronicle, a daily Massachusetts newspaper, for their work with the S.A.F.I. foundation - believe that the traditions of making great coffee and serving others should go hand in hand.

"In Batian Peak, we envision a one-stop destination store for customers looking to enjoy exceptional coffee and tea in the comfort of their own homes," said Peter. "We hope they experience our passion for coffee and tea that spans many family generations. We strive to impact our customers in a small way, and they in turn enable us to impact the lives of people in our village where it all began."

Peter Kagunye moved to the U.S. in 1994 and held two jobs while pursuing his undergraduate studies. After graduating in 1998, he quickly found his passion in business and pursued an MBA. While in graduate school, Kamau traced his true passion and purpose back to his home village and his family's tradition; coffee, tea, and working with people.

About Batian Peak:

Batian Peak was founded by Peter Kagunye with inspiration from his family. Batian Peak traces its humble beginnings to Kairi village, a small rural coffee and tea growing district in central Kenya. Kagunye's family has been growing coffee and tea for decades. Most families in this village rely on coffee as their main source of income. The area has near perfect tropical climate which is ideal for growing coffee. Coffees from this region have a remarkable wine-like flavor and unmistakable aroma. The Batian Peak family also farms tea in a region called Muranga. Muranga is located in the northern highlands of central province.
