April 30, 2005 -- The search for the perfect selection of wines to offer customers goes beyond typical wine tastings. For Brent Bloom, wine manager of Brennan's Farm Market and Thea
Miller, product manager, it requires traveling to the other side of the world to get their hands dirty in this year's New Zealand wine harvest.
"We are dedicated to giving our customers the very best even if that means flying half way around the world to find just the right wine," stated Skip Brennan, owner of Brennan's Farm
Markets, who recently returned from the South Pacific where he was meeting with suppliers. "Understanding how the product is produced, developing relationships with quality suppliers and
bringing those products directly to our customers is what makes us unique."
Miller and Bloom helped the Daniel Schuster Winery in Amberley with their harvest where they picked and crushed grapes. Bloom also bottled wine. By working the harvest, Miller and Bloom
learned first hand what factors create a quality New Zealand wine and then use that understanding to select wines for Brennan's. They learned that this year's heavy rainfall meant a lower
yield but will allow more fruit concentration and richness.
When choosing a New Zealand wine the regions should be considered. The cooler South Island and Omihi region creates an ideal environment for Pinot Noir. Located in this region, the Daniel
Schuster Wines winery contains a complex geology including volcanic soil and a limestone base that influences the vines. When selecting a white (like Sauvignon Blanc) look for wines
produced in the Marlborough region. Hawke's Bay is best known for blends and use of the Merlot grape variety.
One of the new wines discovered on the trip that will be offered in June at Brennan's, South Island, is part of an emerging trend where premium New Zealand wines are bottled with
screwtops instead of the traditional cork. New Zealand has been a testing ground for the screwtop technology and many winemakers see it as the future standard.
Wines purchased from the trip will be exclusive to Brennan's and may not be purchased anywhere else in the United States. The wine made from this year's harvested grapes will be available
for purchase next year. Wine bottled during their visit will be available for purchase in early June.
