December 28, 2004 -- Real-life high school junior varsity football coach, Harold Jones, whose personal story of a close bond with James Robert "Radio" Kennedy became the basis for the
movie "Radio" staring Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Ed Harris, will be the featured guest on "Disability Matters" with Joyce Bender, on Tuesday, December 28, 2004, from 2 PM to 3 PM Eastern Time
on the VoiceAmerica Radio Network (http://www.voice.voiceamerica.com/).
It was the fall of 1964 when Coach Harold Jones first met James "Radio" Kennedy on the football field at McCants Junior High in Anderson, S.C. The people in his hometown gave James
Kennedy the nickname of "Radio" due to his fascination with a transistor radio that he carried with him everywhere. At that time Radio was an eighteen year old who could not read, write,
or speak. He has a cognitive disability.
Coach Jones befriended the young man with the promise of snacks and sodas. Radio helped with all of the athletic teams and was allowed to roam the halls, delivering notes to teachers and
even sitting in on some classes. Radio was always with Coach Jones on the sidelines and became loved by the entire town. To this day Radio holds more high school varsity letters than any
other man in history, having received one each from the T.L. Hanna high school football, basketball and track teams every year for the past three decades.
Retired from coaching in 1999, Coach Jones continues his relationship with Radio is as strong today as it has ever been. He continues to take care of Radio's needs, seeing him at school
and at home.
"Not only is this relationship between Coach Jones and Radio inspirational but also underscores the value persons with disabilities have to offer entire communities", said host Joyce
Bender. "I am honored to have this opportunity to talk with Coach Jones and have him share this powerful relationship with our audience and to shed light on the impact his generosity and
humanity toward this one young man with a disability had on his entire life."
