The Federal Internet Unlawful Gambling Enforcement Act recently introduced in the United States may cause Internet wagering sites to bail out of their American markets, but it does not
mean poker players within the U.S. will not be able to find a poker game online. Smaller poker sites are specializing in the social aspect of the game rather than the monetary side.
New poker site, Gpokr.com (http://gpokr.com) is a small company, with servers in Dallas, but runs out of Toronto, Canada. Gpokr.com is a site where people
can go to play poker free. A visitor can get into a game without having to download it first. Since credit cards, money drafts or bank transactions are not required, no laws or rules are
being broken.
's8220;Gpokr.com is one of the first Internet applications based on Google's8217;s new Web Toolkit technology,'s8221; said developer Ryan Dewsbury. Gpokr.com has been running since June
and in three months has attracted a modest membership of around 12,000 players.
The site focuses on the social and community pleasures of Texas Hold-em. Gpokr.com features a chat-board below each table where players can talk about their hands, tease one another or
complain about their spouses.
's8220;Even without the risk of losing money, we have created a poker site that is very competitive and puts an emphasis on compiling chips,'s8221; said Dewsbury. 's8220;For example, we
compile top ten lists of the best. There are also a lot of statistics built around your performance and your rank can rise or fall depending on how well you play.'s8221;
The enormous interest in Texas Hold-em Poker that has swept the world over the past few years has created a new breed of player. This new player is happy playing with friends for fun
without being overly concerned whether the money is real or not.
's8220;As sites that have been conducting games for a few years start to close down or refuse to accept funds from U.S. based players Gpokr.com is expecting its membership growth to
continue,'s8221; said Dewsbury.
