January 20, 2005 -- A new international web site guarantees to build your muscles...chess muscles that is.
The world's first-ever online chess gym at www.improveyourchess.com claims any player from beginner to advanced club player will strengthen
their game.
Tony Kosten, United Kingdom chess grandmaster and Editor of Improve Your Chess said: "It's just like going to the gym, doing your exercises and feeling fitter.
"Also, we guarantee our members they will get stronger, their play will substantially improve or else they get every penny of their gym subscription back without quibble. That's how
confident we are."
The gym has been sent out to more than a hundred players for testing and the feedback, according to the publishers, has been "very encouraging."
Each gym member gets a 52-series of workouts at a cost of $49.95 (26.71p), which should take up an hour or so of their time. They do the work in their own time and the workouts are
designed for players of differing abilities.
The main purpose of the gym is solving the dilemma that many people do not develop at chess because they do not have "good sight" of the board.
The chess gym enables players to develop this ability through packages of regular tactical exercises, which are carried out in real time and are scored. That way they begin to recognise
certain patterns which should lead to significant improvement in their results.
Alongside these exercises is an evaluation exercise called How Good Is Your Chess. This is also interactive and allows the gym member to sit at the seat of a chess master and play through
one of his actual games
The result is that the member learns how to recognises critical points during a game, begins to understand the thinking of masters and consequently the player's game improves not only
tactically but strategically.
Another feature is a Master Quiz by British Chess Champion Jonathan Rowson, which asks members to think deeply about certain positions and give an evaluation.
This is designed to uncover the psychological dynamics within a chess position, how chess players think...or sometimes how they don't think.
As well as the gym, there is a range of free instruction on the website including instructional games, short essays on opening middle and endgame play, plus special articles for
beginners.
The publisher of the site, Nathan Goldberg, said: "There's something for everyone. But as a club standard chess player myself, I know the most important thing is regular practice as
opposed to book learning.
"It's something that's very difficult to get, apart from playing games. And that in itself is not enough if you want to improve.
"I think the chess gym for the first time will give players of all strengths the possibility of regular and relevant practice, seriously build their playing strength, and as a result, and
enjoy their chess a lot more."
