Community not getting Full Benefit from Pokies
JUST one per cent of the $104 million lost to Geelong gaming machines in a 12-month period was spent back in the community.
It lists community benefit statement claims'' from each local government area.
The 2003-04 list included $19.6 million in claims from Geelong's 27 Pokies operators.
But an analysis found just $1.4 million of the total actually ended up with community groups.
The $19.6 million was taken from the total $104 million in net gaming revenue and dispersed under nine categories from employment to gifts and fixed assets.
Employment accounted for most of the claims, totaling $14 million.
Almost $4.2 million was claimed in fixed assets'' (such as a plasma TV and fridge) and direct and indirect costs'' (in some cases lighting and heating).
Just $1.4 million was spent on gifts, sponsorships, volunteer services and subsidized activities.
Prof Hancock, deputy director of Deakin's public policy and governance program, described the claims as a scam''.
She said her research disproved claims within the industry that the community benefited from the Pokies industry.
