An Accidental Invention Births a Creative New Business

In 2001 Summer Robertson hung up an old brown sock on the eve of her birthday in an attempt to charm her husband into some extra gift giving. The excitement Summer experienced when she found her sock crammed full of little gifts in the morning inspired her to start a new birthday tradition for her family. It also inspired Summer to turn her idea into a new business venture. In Spring 2005 Summer started New Industries and began manufacturing their new invention "The Birthday Sock."

New Industries launched TheBirthdaySock.com in September as a way to sell online. In the few weeks they have been on the web, TheBirthdaysSock.com has received widespread response from around the country. Respected online retailers such as CraftsburyKids.com have been eager to be the first to sell The Birthday Sock. Several online magazines including Delight.com and TheDailyStroll.com have given The Birthday Sock rave reviews. Customer feedback has also been positive. One customer reviewer says, "The whole idea and site is funny and genius, the sort of thing that makes you wonder why it hasn't been around forever already."

Summer Robertson states, " Birthdays are too easily forgotten, and creative ways of celebrating birthdays are hard to come by year after year. The Birthday Sock solves these problems by creating anticipation for the big day, and adding another opportunity for birthday surprises. It's a great feeling to wake up on your birthday morning and find your Birthday Sock stuffed full of little gifts!"

The Birthday Sock is available online at: www.thebirthdaysock.com

New Industries is located in Portland, OR.
