Golfweek Names Tidewater Plantation One Of Americas Top Residential Golf Courses
January 8, 2005 -- Tidewater Golf Club is one of America's Top 100 Residential Courses, according to the 2005 special edition of Golfweek. Often called the "Pebble Each of the East," Tidewater has received numerous other accolades for its scenic beauty and challenging design.
When it first opened its gates in 1990, Tidewater Golf Club became the only golf course ever named "Best New Public Course in America" by both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine in the same year.
Built on a forested peninsula overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway, Atlantic Ocean and saltwater marshes, Tidewater follows the land's natural contours and features many elevation changes.
Golfweek's team of 350 trained raters reviewed thousands of golf courses located in residential communities across the United States. Only 100 met the standards to be included in this elite group, considered to be "models of smart planning."
Golfweek's ratings are based on such criteria as overall routing; quality and consistency of feature shaping; the land plan; interest of putting surfaces and greens surrounds; variety and memorability of the par 3s, par 4s and par 5s; course conditioning; landscape and tree management; and Golfweek's trademark "walk in the park" test, according to Bradley Klein, Golfweek senior writer. "Judging a golf course doesn't depend on how well you play, but on how pleasing and interesting the course is as an experience," Klein added.
Klein credits Tidewater Golf Club with starting the trend that has "helped transform the identity of Myrtle Beach and made it more of a residential golf community, not just a haven for daily-fee golfers."
Tidewater's 18,000-square-foot golf clubhouse is an upscale facility with two multi-function rooms, private lockers, a spacious pro-shop, and restaurant.
