Economy Will Get A Boost In Myrtle Beach When Martins PGA TOUR Superstore Father Son Team Classic Tees Off

The economy of Myrtle Beach, S.C. will get a boost in July when nearly 1600 golfers come to town for the Martin's PGA TOUR Superstore National Father & Son Team Classic golf tournament July 17 through 19. The 54-hole, three-day family event is the largest Father-Son golf tournament in the world and this year's roster will include players from 45 states and 9 foreign countries.

The tournament -- which is open to fathers, sons, sons-in-law, grandfathers, grandsons, uncles, nephews, stepfathers and stepsons -- brought just over $3.8 million into the local economy in 2007. In addition to lodging and local transportation expenditures, participants spent just under $1 million on meals, tours, and other entertainment. Many participants arrived in Myrtle Beach days before the tournament to take advantage of pre-tournament practice rounds.

As in previous years, registration for the 2008 event will be held at the Martin's PGA TOUR Superstores in Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach, where each participant will receive a $200 gift certificate. The festive and golf-centric atmosphere of the registration provides participants with an opportunity to experience the largest selection of golf equipment, apparel, shoes and golf-themed home dcor in the Grand Strand area. It also gives them easy access to game improvement technologies like those found in professional "Tour Vans" at PGA tournament sites, as well as opportunities to talk with professional instructors, clubfitters and clubmakers.

"The Father & Son Team Classic is a tournament unlike any other in the world," said Robert Harper of Southern Dunes Golf & Travel, organizer of the event. "For the players, it's a time to enjoy, bond and make lasting memories. It brings millions of dollars into the local economy. And it advances PGA TOUR Superstore's mission to help grow the game of golf by making it more enjoyable for recreational golfers. It's a win-win all around."
