World Golf Championships to be Challenged by the NEW World Series of...

February 26, 2005 -- Story after story is being written this week by sports writers around the world about the rain delayed Accenture Match Play Championship at La Costa Resort. This is the latest edition of the World Golf Championships that replaced the old World Series of Golf event called the NEC Invitational that was played at Firestone five of its first six years. Accenture features an elite 64-man field of pros playing for a $7.5 million purse with $1.3 million going to the guy who makes it five matches.

Few golfers know that the World Series of Golf (WSG) is back and will truly offer golfers from around the world, not just 64 elite pros, a chance to walk away with a slice of a $3.8 million purse where the winner pockets a cool $1 million! Anyone who has heard of this new tournament soon realizes that it is for good golfers with nerves of steel where driving, chipping and putting only represents half of the skill set needed to win. Unlike the Accenture Match Play Championship format, the new World Series of Golf format combines the excitement of golf with one of the world's most popular card games... poker. It is designed to give non-professional golfers a fair opportunity to compete in a world-class golf event where they can win big money playing against equal or better golfers, even professionals. The equalizing element comes from an exciting hole-by-hole bet-and-play format that is modeled after the game of poker.

As in a poker game, the WSG format is played in groups of three, four or six players, depending on the round, who "ante up" at every hole as they prepare to tee-off. The ante is followed by a pass, bet or fold on each golf shot. The combination of wise betting and good golfing means that any player in that match can win the hole whether they bet $500 or go "all in." Talk about drama! It could also result in one or more of the other players folding on that hole just as they might in a poker game. When a player is out of money, they are out of the match and the tournament. The player who wins all of the money from the players in his or her group wins the match and advances to the next round of golf.

Although there are 432 players competing in the WSG Open tournament, a player only has to beat three players in round one, two players in round two and five players in round three to reach the final round of play and earn a share of the $1.9 million final round prize money. Win your first round and you are guaranteed to go home with $15,000 and win your second round and your guarantee jumps to $25,000! A win in round three puts you into the big money final round.

The man who dreamt up this exciting tournament format is Ken Maul of Las Vegas, NV and seeing the potential lead him to secure the trademark for the old World Series of Golf that was abandoned by the PGA a few years back. He quickly followed that move with a patent application for the game format to prevent others from stealing the idea. Since mid 2004, Ken and his associates have been refining the game and introducing it to potential event sponsors. With the help of an informative website, www.TheWorldSeriesOfGolf.com , Ken has been sharing his alternative golf tournament format with the world.

The first major event has yet to be confirmed although a major Canadian sponsor has been at the table discussing an August tournament in the Niagara Falls area. Several major sports figures have also shown an interest in both helping Ken launch the company and sponsoring the first event in the USA.

A visit to the World Series of Golf Inc. website at www.TheWorldSeriesofGolf.com is needed to learn how this tournament is run and see how the $3.8M prize money purse is divided amongst the 108 winners!
