0 Council Tax Frozen in Greenwich

Greenwich Council (http://www.greenwich.gov.uk) Leader Chris Roberts intends to bring the chill into the Council chamber next month when he proposes to freeze the Council Tax (http://www.greenwich.gov.uk) in Greenwich.

This news compares favourably to the announcement on Monday, January 19, by the Local Government Association (LGA) that the average increase in council tax in England will be 3.5 per cent.

Greenwich'ss Council (http://www.greenwich.gov.uk) Tax rise over the last 10 years has been 27 per cent, compared to over 80 per cent in neighbouring Bexley and Bromley.

Councillor Chris Roberts said:

For the past ten years Greenwich has established a record which is all but unparalleled across London for rigorous and efficient management of its budgets. While continuing to levy what is almost the lowest cumulative Council Tax increase in London, we have seen Greenwich go from having the second highest Council Tax in London to being 22nd of 32 boroughs.

At the same time, we have invested in major service and infrastructure improvements, including the development of the multi-purpose Eltham Centre, the development of 23 nurseries and the payment of 's163;1m to fund an extra dedicated Violent and Organised Crime Unit, which has in its first six months of operation arrested several known emerging gang leaders.

Councillor Roberts added:

I will be asking all Councillors to join me in supporting a freeze in the Council Tax for local residents next month.
