On November 13, 2008 the USCIS announced that federal contractors and subcontractors will be required to begin using E-Verify starting on Jan. 15, 2009, to verify employees's eligibility to work in the United States. The E-Verify program, administered by the Department of Homeland Security, allows employers to confirm the employment eligibility of its employees using federal database information.

Companies awarded a contract with the federal government will be required to enroll in E-Verify within 30 days of the contract award date.
