Hank Johnsons Congressional Campaign Building Momentum Gaining Support Cynthia McKinney Opponent Is On the Move

Amid a series of endorsements and impressive debate performances, former DeKalb commissioner Henry 's8220;Hank's8221; Johnson's8217;s campaign to unseat Cynthia McKinney in the July 18th Democratic primary is rapidly building momentum. The race remains close with strong indications Johnson has moved to a front-runner position.

's8220;I's8217;m thrilled to see that people are responding so enthusiastically to what I's8217;m all about,'s8221; said Johnson. 's8220;Integrity, responsible leadership, and sensible solutions are what the 4th District deserves. I will be a consensus-building Congressman whom voters can trust and respect.'s8221;

As the gap between Johnson and McKinney has closed, the McKinney campaign has gone to great lengths to avoid facing Johnson on television. McKinney failed to show up at either of the weekend's8217;s major televised debates, attracting negative media attention and disgust from voters seeking an open discussion of the issues.

's8220;We's8217;ve closed the gap. Our phones have been ringing off the hook and contributions are pouring in. We have the momentum and we's8217;re very confident,'s8221; said Johnson's8217;s press secretary, Barbara Ingram.

Johnson's8217;s campaign has attracted widespread support and national media attention. He will be featured this week on the nationally-syndicated television program 's8220;Hannity & Colmes,'s8221; where he will defend his progressive vision. An enthusiastic Creative Loafing endorsement praised Johnson and urged voters, 's8220;it is time for Cynthia to say good bye.'s8221; Urban Independents, a local progressive watchdog group, gave Johnson their seal of approval. Black Entertainment Television (BET) speculated in an article on Monday that McKinney is on the ropes and warned her to keep her eye on the race. Johnson was also featured in one of Capitol Hills's8217;s most prestigious publications, Congressional Quarterly.

Johnson has made job growth, affordable healthcare, and excellence in education the domestic priorities of the campaign. He has also pledged to work for immediate action to address environmental issues and a responsible disengagement from the conflict in Iraq.
