April 17, 2005 -- On April 11th, 2005, a cleverly disguised bill was filed in the North Carolina House of Representatives. The "Access to Higher Education and a Better Economic Future"
bill is a thinly masquereded piece of legislation that allows illegal immigrants access to North Carolina Universities at In-State tuition rates. At the time, the bill with 4 sponsors and
32 co-sponsors was being lauded as a pro-economic/education bill. North Carolina state funded universities are some of the cheapest in this country. Our country has a responsibility to
the citizens of this country, not illegal immigrants. The 16-school UNC system already turns away thousands of qualified, LEGAL students each and every year. Allowing additional seats in
an already limited system to be handed out to non-legal students in ludicrus and a complete slap in the face of all taxpaying North Carolina citizens. In four days, the amount of pressure
resulting from thousands of outraged citizens has resulted in seven legislators removing their name from the bill. In an open letter to College Republicans, I asked each member to send an
email to their state Representative as well as forwarding my request to friends, family, and the general public. I am asking the readers of this paper to do the same. On my website,
www.AlanTeitleman.com , I have posted the email addresses of all 120 NC House members, the letter that I sent to the General Assembly, and links to other sites with information and news
concerning this legislation.
Make no mistake about it. If this piece of legislation passes, it opens the doors wide for a flood of pro-illegal immigration legislation to fall through the cracks. The citizens of North
Carolina have spoken loud and clear. Now it is time to make those who are elected to vote in our stead stand up for what we believe in.
