New Training Helps Correctional Educators Enhance Lessons toSpanishSpeaking...

Correctional educators with Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) (http://www.correctionscorp.com/) are becoming better equipped to deliver specialized programming to Spanish-speaking offenders from Latin America.

For more than five years, CCA has partnered with the Mexico City-based National Institute for Adult Education (http://www.inea.gob.mx/) (Instituto Nacional de Educaci's243;n para los Adultos, or INEA) to provide adult education in Spanish at 12 company facilities. As a governmental organization that designs and delivers education programs to adults, INEA also oversees the accreditation and certification of basic education studies in Mexico.

Beginning in April, educational facilitators from INEA began a series of complimentary on-site training sessions at CCA facilities. Designed for educators who teach Latin American offenders expected to be returned to their countries of origin upon release, the three-day training focuses on strategies and methods that enhance outreach to such students.

It'ss much easier to get hired if you have an education, said Dr. Juan Jos's233; Serrato, director, International Affairs for INEA. It'ss always been tough, but now it'ss tougher.

Previously referred to as the Mexican GED program, INEA supplies facilities with materials and curriculum for the primaria level (grades 1-6) and secundaria level (grades 7-9). CCA has issued more than 4,000 Mexican educational certificates, which are transferable to many Spanish-speaking Latin American countries.

Through this training, our educators benefit from direct, intensive instruction from the leaders in adult education in Spanish, said Dennis Bradby, CCA vice president of Inmate Programs. They are refining skills that will improve the way they administer and grade tests, as well as how they interact with and present information to students.

Training sessions have already taken place at CCA'ss Tallahatchie County Correctional Center (Tutwiler, Miss.). Other planned training sessions are as follows:

>    Red Rock Correctional Center (Eloy, Ariz.) - June 17-19

>    California City Correctional Center (California City, Calif.) - June 24-26

>    Florence Correctional Center (Florence, Ariz.) - July 14-16

>    Cibola County Correctional Center (Milan, NM) - July 28-30

>    North East Ohio Correctional Center (Youngstown, Ohio) - Aug. 26-28

>    Crowley County Correctional Facility (Olney Springs, Colo.) - Sept. 23-25

>    North Fork Correctional Facility (Sayre, Okla.) - Oct. 6-8

>    McRae Correctional Facility (McRae, Ga.) - Oct. 20-22

>    Eden Detention Center (Eden, Texas) - Nov. 25-27
