Objectivity Inc. Violin Memory Benchmark Yields Breakthrough Performance

Violin Memory and Objectivity, Inc. (http://www.objectivity.com/source=7pr) have released a joint white paper detailing the dramatic results of a benchmark that generated a four-fold increase in data writing and a nearly eighty-fold acceleration in data reading when using Objectivity/DB with the Violin 1010 Memory Appliance versus a local SATA disk.

The Violin 1010 is the industry's first Memory Appliance that supports both scalable memory (DRAM) and high performance storage (Flash). Objectivity/DB is a high performance database management system (http://www.objectivity.com/pages/objectivity/overview.aspsource=7pr) that uses a powerful, distributed processing architecture to manage object databases.

For the benchmark, Objectivity/DB (http://www.objectivity.com/pages/objectivity/default.aspsource=7pr) was configured as a standalone application running in a multi-core, multi-CPU server and accessing its local disk system and the Violin 1010. Two software suites were used:

- NetElem - which is modeled on a telecom Network Element Management System

- IngestProto - which is a simplified high data ingest rate data fusion application.

Results for both software suites show unparalleled performance and scalability increases when using the two technologies in tandem.

"The combination of the Violin 1010 and Objectivity/DB dramatically changes the price-performance possibilities for high throughput computing environments," said Leon Guzenda, Objectivity's chief technology officer. "Three years ago we built a system that ingested and processed over a Terabyte per hour. The partnership with Violin Memory is a significant milestone in our quest to help our customers configure affordable, reliable systems that can handle a Petabyte per day."

The benchmark has positive implications for applications that manipulate or query large amounts of complex data, particularly if they require rapid response-times or real-time data analysis. By implementing a combination of the two technologies, companies can realize significant performance improvements and cost reductions for their applications.

"The benchmark showed that specific tasks within Objectivity/DB could be accelerated by 75 times using the Violin 1010 memory appliance," said Donpaul Stephens, Violin's founder and president. "With this level of acceleration, Objectivity/DB can extract more value from the customers' data and enable mission-critical systems with significantly lower and more predictable performance."

A note on Objectivity/DB

Objectivity/DB has a fully scalable, distributed processing architecture that manages localized, centralized or distributed object databases by synthesizing large, complicated streams of data into a single logical view.
