Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario has a new author, Donna Gulley, that has a lot to say about improving your mental, spiritual and physical wellbeing. Her first of five books is titled Pane vs. Pain and is available at www.panevspain.com. She really likes hanging out at St. Joseph's Island where life is quiet and calm and the air is fresh.

People don't seem to get the PANE aspect of the book until they realize it stands for Prayer, Attitude, Nutrition and Exercise. These are things that people find difficult to include in their life day after day. It takes effort to change the way you think about yourself and your life. It is what we think about everyday that becomes our reality.

You need to organize your day by starting out with prayer - it can be a simple process - just recognize that there is a Divine presence in this world and you have to give service to whomever that is for you. This also ties nicely into Attitude - because often what we need is just a little attitude adjustment. Be grateful for all the good things you have in your life - even if that is just life. The fact that you woke up this morning - is a start to a whole new day. So be thankful for a fresh start and change the way you think about that day - it is a gift - so treat it kindly.

Nutrition - Start each and every day off with a helping of fruit - on an empty stomach. Then be sure to have at least 5 vegetables sometime during that day. Don't forget - sometimes when you have a good salad - that supplies the five vegetables that can help you through your day. Nutrition is not as much about what you put into your body each day, but more about what you do not put into your body that counts. Drugs and alcohol are very damaging to your body. Stop smoking. Also things like fast foods with zero nutrition and carbonated beverages. You are what you eat. Donna's philosophy about eating is that it is not about what you do occasionally that hurts you but what you eat habitually that can be damaging.

We all know that we need exercise - it keeps our joints loose and the rest of our bodies in order. If the only exercise you feel you can do - is walking - that is the exercise that will help you instantly. Stop using elevators and use the stairs. Park far out in the parking lot when you go shopping - it will save your car from the nasty people that bang your car with their car door and gives you a chance to improve your health by walking to the store. The only time the parking lots are full is during Christmas shopping days - so give yourself every excuse to get exercise.

There are a lot more tips in this book along with some appendices that will help you get on with your new regime.
