Korean Acedemy of Taekwondo to Host Kickathon for Brain Damaged Child
The Korean Academy of Taekwondo (KAT) will host a kickathon on October 15th, 2005 in conjunction with National Martial Arts Day. The kickathon will seek to raise awareness of choking injuries and money for treatment for two year old Gabriel Nofsinger. Gabriel is the younger brother of KAT student Brandon Nofsinger (9). On September 14th, 2004, Gabriel choked on a grape while attending daycare. He lost consciousness and spent ten days in the intensive care unit before he was able to breathe on his own again. He has not yet recovered to his previous level of mental development.
Since that time Gabriel has begun to show improvement when he takes dives in a hyperbaric chamber that forces extra oxygen into his brain. He has also begun to move about with the aid of a walker, respond to stimuli, and work towards speaking. Unfortunately, this therapy is very expensive, and the family has other children to support. His mother is now required to spend all of her time attending to Gabriel and his needs.
KAT students will solicit donations and perform thousands of kicks each during the one hour nationwide synchronized event on October 15th. The day will also include free community self defense lessons as well as a big screen video game tournament. We are asking for your support for this event and the recovery of Gabriel.
