Cats in Iraq Could Spread Bird Flu

Cats in Iraq have been found infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus. That'ss according to U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit No 3 (NAMRU-3) as reported in the August issue of Emerging Infectious Diseases.

These cats apparently ate some chickens who died from avian influenza, and caught the disease from the chickens.

This is not the first time cats have caught bird flu. A cat with the disease in Germany caused many Europeans to dump their pets. Turkish authorities have reported bird flu infected cats. And reportedly there have been some in Indonesia. In the Bangkok Zoo, tigers died from eating raw chickens who'sd been infected with bird flu.

The cats in Iraq are the northern, Kurdish controlled area of the country. The genetic strain in Clade II, the same as found in migratory birds near Qinghai Lake, China in 2005.

American, British and other Coalition soldiers in Iraq have enough to do fighting terrorists, says Richard Stooker, author of How to Protect Yourself and Your Family From Bird Flu. Unfortunately, the virus doesn'st care about humanity'ss other problems.

Coalition authorities and the government of Iraq need to make sure the virus is controlled and that all soldiers and civilians are aware of the dangers and precautions to take. If it'ss in one part of the country today, it can spread to other parts. Just ask Indonesia.

There'ss also the outside chance that a soldier could become infected with the virus just before a transfer out. They could spread the disease while still in their incubation period. If they leave the country due to being wounded, they could spread it to military bases in Germany or Walter Reed Hospital. I hope the military is on guard against that.
