New University of Washington Study Investigates Barriers to MentalHealth...

Seattle is fairly famous for its gray weather and ability to leave some people with a bit of the blues, especially in the winter months. But the city is also home to psychological disruptions of a more serious and pervasive kind. As with most major metropolitan areas across the United States, Seattle hosts a significant number of people with mental health disorders, whether life-threatening or not. From depression to schizophrenia, anxiety disorders to elaborate addictions, mental health concerns affect many Seattle residents with considerably debilitating problems. Working in conjunction with the University of Washington, its Psychology Department, the Harborview Medical Center, and the Center for Healthcare Improvement for Addictions, Mental Illness and Medically Vulnerable Populations, also known as CHAMMP, a team of researchers has conducted a study to determine how Seattle'ss mental health consumers are deterred from treatment, as well as which avenues of action carry the best potential for positive change with the help of a therapist.

The study, released in the new April issue of the journal Psychiatric Services, is based on hour- to ninety minute-long interviews with over fifteen local community health care clinics and staff. Participants were asked an extensive battery of questions, all garnered from their personal experiences on the job as part of the Seattle mental health care system. Results suggested that many residents with challenging disorders and issues are reluctant to seek professional help due to social stigmas, as well as problems of low funding for clinics and poor organization. Calling for greater public attention to these matters, the study suggests that approaches to psychotherapy and other treatments must embrace positive principles, and be made more widely available throughout the community, especially for those of disadvantaged status.

There are a number of Seattle area mental health resources. One leader in Seattle'ss psychotherapy culture is GoodTherapy.org an organization that offers mental health professionals and potential therapy clients a warm and reliable place to start a journey towards success. Accepting only those therapists and counselors who work in accordance with the ideals of non-pathologizing, empowering, and collaborative treatment, the service allows clients to search for a Seattle provider while avoiding negative or harmful experiences. Approaching an international membership of five thousand, the GoodTherapy.org Therapist Seattle (http://www.goodtherapy.org/Seattle-Therapy.htm) Organization is on its way to answering this Seattle study'ss cry for quality.
