LASIK Expert Dr. James Salz Gives Three Lectures at the Annual Meeting of the San Diego Eye Bank

Dr. James Salz (www.drsalz.com) of Laser Vision Medical Associates was invited to speak at the annual meeting of the San Diego Eye Bank where he delivered three lectures on July 29 and 30, 2006. This was the third time Dr. Salz was invited to speak at this meeting. The San Diego Eye Bank annual meeting is unique in that the audience consists of both ophthalmologists and ophthalmic technicians. Dr. Salz and the other three invited speakers brought those in attendance up-to-date concerning current concepts in glaucoma, retina and refractive surgery.

Dr. Salz's8217;s first lecture was on intraocular lens calculations in patients with cataracts who have had previous refractive surgery such as LASIK, PRK (photorefractive keratotomy) and RK (radial keratotomy). Dr. Salz commented that as patients who have had LASIK and other refractive eye procedures years ago get older, some of them are developing cataracts. 's8220;This is a normal part of the aging process and is not related to the LASIK, PKR and RK,'s8221; Dr. Salz continued. 's8220;The cataract surgery itself is no more difficult than in any other patient who had not had LASIK but calculating the power of the lens implant that goes into the eye is more challenging.'s8221; In the course of the lecture, Dr. Salz reviewed seven different methods for doing these calculations, which will help surgeons achieve better results in their patients.

The second lecture concerned a review of Phakic lens implants including the STAAR Vision and the American Medical Optics (AMO) Verysye and a new anterior chamber phakic implant under FDA study by Alcon. Phakic lens implants are lenses that are placed inside the eye, just in front of the pupil of patients who are extremely near sighted and cannot be corrected by conventional LASIK surgery. These are the patients who can benefit most from this type of surgery as very strong glasses do not give normal vision and it is encouraging that two of these lenses are now FDA-approved.

The third was on the medical legal aspects of refractive surgery with emphasis on the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company (OMIC). In the final lecture, Dr. Salz reviewed the claims experience of OMIC for the past several years and discussed proper screening techniques and informed consent issues which can help protect both patients and their doctors. A common problem is proper interpretation of corneal maps before surgery to make sure the patient is a good candidate for LASIK or another laser eye surgery procedure.

Dr. Salz stated: 's8220;I am very pleased to have the opportunity to share my experience with other colleagues in the hopes of improving patient care involving both cataract and refractive surgery.'s8221;
