Behavior Expert and Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist Carl Allen Schoner has developed an effective cognitive solution for smokers who would like to quite, but believe they cannot be
hypnotized.
His solution is to ask smokers to identify all of the places where they do smoke, and all of the places where they don's8217;t. Over the years, fewer and fewer people smoke in their
homes, their cars, their offices, and other places, both public and private. What Schoner wants to identify are those places where the smoker prohibits himself from lighting up. When
questioned if they are comfortable not smoking in these self-prohibited areas, virtually 100% of respondents report that they are. However, when these same people are asked why they can
get by without smoking in their own homes, but immediately crave cigarettes outside their homes, most of their answers are not so certain.
Schoner takes this opportunity to help the smoker realize that he or she is in fact hypnotized all the time. He makes them see that they have developed a belief system that says, 's8220;I
am not a smoker's8221; when they are in self-prohibited areas, and 's8220;I am a smoker's8221; in others. All the smoker has to do is extend the belief system that they are not a smoker
into all other areas of their life. When the smoker says, 's8220;I don's8217;t know how to do that!'s8221; Schoner demonstrates how easy it is by asking the client to repeat each letter
he utters, one at a time. He then states 's8220;I's8221; which the client repeats, followed by 's8220;Q,'s8221; then followed by 's8220;U,'s8221; which is then followed by 's8220;I's8221;
finally followed by 's8220;T.'s8221;
Having said that, he then asks the smoker what the letters spell. The smoker thinks for only a second or so and says 's8220;I Quit!'s8221; after which Schoner quickly grasps and shakes
the clients hand while exclaiming 's8220;Congratulations! That is wonderful news! I am so proud of you! You got it! You are now and forever more a non smoker!'s8221; At this point in time
many clients are suddenly surprised to realize - a realization that Schoner calls the Ah-ha! - phenomenon, that they are indeed a non-smoker.
The simplicity of this exercise is that it completely bypasses the normal resistance that many people have to the idea of being talked into a trance-state, which they do not trust. This
approach is similar to what Milton Erickson might have used (Erickson is considered by many to be the 's8220;The Father of Modern Hypnosis's8221;). This simple approach works by
effectively jolting the client's8217;s hypnotic 's8220;dreamscape's8221; - a term coined by Schoner to refer to our everyday hypnotic state, making them realize that an alternative state
is not only possible, but exceedingly easy to achieve. To do that, clients need only to change their minds.
Schoner has authored a book, Dream Psycles - A New Awakening in Hypnosis that discusses this and many other techniques that can be used to change behavior, increase confidence, build
wealth, and improve relationships.
