May 21, 2005 -- Robert M. Dean MD announces that the fact that a laser is a focused beam of light energy is exactly why it works. There are multiple wavelengths at which lasers operate;
the depth of penetration determines their usefulness. However, like any other medical instrument it must be operated by a competently trained practitioner.
The most superficial lasers operate around the 500 nm wavelength and burn off brown spots and tiny broken blood vessels. The tattoo removal lasers operate at 694nm and because of their
selective mode of action; the artificial dermal pigments are destroyed photothermically and removed without scar.
By far, the most popular use for lasers says Dr. Dean has been hair removal. These lasers need to operate at higher wavelengths, 1064nm being optimal to penetrate deep enough to burn the
hair follicle. Some clinics will use lasers in the 700-800 nm range, because of a larger spot size and therefore less time in the office. The downside to this is that they must stay out
of the sun for weeks to prevent burning or scaring.
Robert M. Dean MD graduated from Rutgers University and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He completed his training at Brown University and at Duke University Hospital. He is certified
by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is listed as one of the top doctors in his area by the Castle Connolly Guide.
