The Friendly Society Private Hospital Commence Construction on 30Million...

The Friendly Society Private Hospital (http://www.fsph.org.au/), located in Bundaberg Queensland, has commenced construction on a $30 million re-development. The re-development will increase the physical size of the hospital by a staggering 70% and will deliver 57 additional inpatient beds and six beds for day oncology.

For the past two years, the hospital has been functioning at peak occupancy, which has prevented the hospital from meeting the growing community need for private admissions, said Alan Cooper, hospital CEO.

The Friendly Society Private Hospital (http://www.fsph.org.au/) is currently an 85 bed acute care medical facility, boasting five state of the art operating theatres, modern equipment and an excellent team of specialists and healthcare (http://www.fsph.org.au/home.html) professionals. The re-development will strengthen the facility through the addition of an Intensive Care Unit and a Cardiac Catherization Lab.

The addition of a Cardiac Cath Lab will bring new cardiac services to Bundaberg and the surrounding region which are currently not available; significantly boosting the current Coronary Care services provided by the Friendly Society Private Hospital (http://www.fsph.org.au/) and those available to the increasingly ageing local community. In fact the private cardiac services being developed will ultimately be the only one of its kind between Townsville and the Sunshine Coast.

When asked what this means for patients living both within our region and outside of our traditional catchment area, Alan Cooper replied. This expansion means patients will have improved access to more health care services and most importantly patients will no longer have to travel so far for many of the new services that are due to come online, especially those that will be provided in the Cardiac Cath Lab. This will ultimately increase chances of survival following a cardiac episode.

The hospital'ss Physiotherapy and Allied Health Care offering will also be significantly bolstered as a direct result of the re-development, as too will the facility'ss ability to accommodate additional specialist services, which are naturally anticipated to grow in line with the expansion. The re-development will result in large physical changes to the current facility and it'ss layout with the main hospital entrance and the Afterhours Medical Service set to be relocated to Woondooma Street and a third level being added to the hospital.

To cater for the increased hospital size and the admissions that will come with this, the hospital workforce will increase by in excess of 100 new employees when the first stage is opened, with a further 40 added when stage two of the re-development is opened. The second stage will be the opening of the top floor and the last 30 beds in several years time as demand continues to grow.

This is an exciting new development which will support the rapidly expanding aged community. The Friendly Society Private Hospital (http://www.fsph.org.au/) has a mission to be the HOSPITAL of CHOICE for Friendly Quality Healthcare. This expansion helps to further address this mission by developing services that have been identified as being needed by this community and providing them with a local choice that is currently not available. -- Alan Cooper, Hospital CEO.
