Having already opened a site for the publishing side of the business at www.WoodLilyBooks.com Patricia was prepared for the challenge presented by Journals and Papers. "Being a web designer and computer systems person, I love the Internet and the opportunities it presents for marketing and retail," she explains. "It seemed the perfect opportunity to run a retail business and still be able to work out of a home office."
Keeping a journal isn't merely a business for Patricia; it is her admitted passion. "Creativity is important, and sharing knowledge and the love of keeping a journal is important; one must keep in touch with their inner spirit. We didn't just pull a widget out of the sky and decide to start selling it. We have a history with our products," says Patricia, a lifelong journal writer who is very keen on the concept of a physical journal over an electronic one. She explains, "I also have an online journal, but I have several print journals, and I find that I don't go anywhere without a journal. I've always got something in my bag, whether it's a pad or a full hardbound journal. If I find it's a beautiful day, I might stop and want to write something down. I think the online journals are more about sharing with other people, because anyone can read them, whereas the print journals are more private."
Patricia has also begun a blog for her customers at www.JournalsAndPapersBlog.com detailing not only her products but the way people use them. "It will be a blog that discusses how to journal, includes daily journal topics, and articles about paper used for writing and printing," she explains. "I prefer to use it to discuss the art of keeping a journal, which may branch to the types of journals one can use. The main goal is to discuss what keeping a journal is all about."
As the store progresses, Patricia plans to add more products and styles, tailoring the inventory to the needs of her customers. "I recently added some small specialty notebooks for women," she says. "They have inspirational quotes on the front. We also carry classic quality leather journals, and have many styles that men can enjoy, too. We have adjusted our pricing to provide a break with postage, and we strive to keep our postal rates lower, to pass on the savings to our clients. We can also provide special pricing on bulk orders, so if someone is looking to purchase several journals for a class, or for corporate gifts, they can contact us directly."
