Choosing the perfect gift can be a challenge. The Teapot Angel, who dispenses heavenly advice at Teapot Heaven & Gifts, has made a list of an even dozen tips to help people give the perfect gift every time.
1. Make a list and check it twice. Write down the names of all the people you want to buy gifts for, keep notes that help you with your shopping, and list the gift you choose for each.
Angels don't have to do this, but I've learned from watching folks shop here at Teapot Heaven that humans sometimes have a hard time remembering everybody and keeping straight what
they've bought and what they need to buy.
2. Remember, it's all about them. You've probably heard some of the same gift horror stories that I have--the husband who gives golf clubs to his wife who never sets foot on the golf
course or the adventurous lady who gives her far-from-adventurous sister sky-diving lessons. When you're choosing a gift, forget about what you like and focus on the person who'll get the
gift--something easy for angels but from what I've seen, not so easy for people.
3. Be observant. You can learn a lot from paying attention. Notice if your wife has a collection of salt and pepper shakers or teapots. See the signs of an avid golfer in your client's
office. Recognize that your friend has butterflies or angels or ladybugs all over her house. I can't tell you how many times I've heard the ladies in the shop ask someone what the person
likes and the shopper has no idea. Look around you and listen.
4. Above all, do no harm. Avoid giving gifts that are inappropriate for the recipient's culture or religion. Don't give liquor to a recovering alcoholic, candy to a diabetic, or perfume
to someone allergic to fragrances. If you don't know the culture, religion, or health restrictions of the recipient, choose something that won't offend anybody. Angels always know what's
appropriate, but if you don't know, don't take a chance.
5. Make it personal. You don't need to create a gift yourself--though handmade gifts and homemade goodies are great if you have the time and talent. You can make any gift personal by
enclosing a personal note: "I immediately thought of you when I saw this seashore cross knowing how much you enjoy the seashore and how important your faith is to you" or "This lighthouse
mug reminded me of the lighthouse we saw last summer, and I thought you'd enjoy adding it to your mug collection."
6. Make it different. Especially if you're giving business gifts, look for something out of the ordinary. If you send a gift basket, have a custom basket created so your gift won't be the
same as a gift from someone else. All your time and effort--and money--will be wasted if the client you're trying to impress can't tell your gift from half a dozen others.
