Its a Sweep Edmonton Oilers Take Stanley Cup 40 Over Carolina Hurricanes in NHL Ice Breaker Simulation
After a 104-game season, it just wasn's8217;t in the cards for the Carolina Hurricanes.
The up-start Edmonton Oilers stormed out of the gate with back-to-back blowout victories in Raleigh, then tightened it up and held on to take final two games of the Stanley Cup Finals best-of-seven series over the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Oilers (played by NHL Ice Breaker quick-study Brian Lichterman) took the wind out of the Hurricanes (played by Joey Bower, NHL Ice Breaker game tester extraordinaire) with a couple of one-sided victories to open the series. Game One was all Edmonton in a 9-1 trouncing. The Oilers lost their shutout bid half way through the third period, but that was about the only thing that didn's8217;t go right for the visitors.
The Canes didn's8217;t fare much better in Game Two, dropping an 8-3 decision. The Oilers were successful on a first period penalty shot, then added two more to take a commanding lead. It was 4-0 early in the second period before Carolina rallied for two quick goals. However, four third period goals from four different Oilers shooters put Game Two out of reach.
Game Three saw Carolina take their first lead of the Finals on
the game 's8217;s opening shift, which quieted the raucous Edmonton crowd. However, the lead was short-lived, as the Oilers tied it up with a power play and took a 2-1 lead. Edmonton went up 3-1 early in the second period and
the game was salted away midway through the third period. The Canes added a late goal, but it was too little too late. Final score: 4-2.
With a sweep on their minds, Edmonton came out firing in Game Four. An early goal gave the Oilers a 1-0 lead. The Canes goaltender made several big saves in the first period, however, to keep
the game close. And it seemed to work, as Carolina tied it up on a goal late in the second period. However, that would prove to be the Canes's8217; final goal of the 2005-06 season.
The Stanley Cup winning goal came off the stick of the Oilers captain, and
the game was sealed with an insurance marker late in the third to put the series on ice. Final score: 3-1.
Bring on the brooms and the champagne!
