Youth participation in hockey and other contact sports continues to grow nationwide. As with all contact sports, if the sport is not played with an awareness of safety considerations, the
potential exists for serious injury. In an effort to raise awareness and promote safety in the sport of ice hockey, Mason-based Seapine Software and the Cincinnati Amateur Hockey
Association (CAHA) have teamed up to bring the Safety Towards Other Players (S.T.O.P.) program to the association.
The S.T.O.P. program, started in Canada in 1996, is a visual reminder to all players of their commitment to fair play by avoiding checking from behind. The patch is in the shape and color
of a stop sign and is affixed to the back of a jersey to clearly signal an oncoming player to STOP and not check.
's8220;CAHA exists to promote teamwork, sportsmanship, integrity, and fairness through the sport of hockey. With this program, we continue to educate our skaters and families to promote
safety on the ice,'s8221; said Jim Geyer, president of CAHA. 's8220;With the support of Seapine Software, we are now able to bring the S.T.O.P. program to the Cincinnati Amateur Hockey
Association.'s8221;
According to Richard Riccetti, president and CEO of Seapine, 's8220;Ice hockey is an exciting sport, combining speed, skill, conditioning, and above all, teamwork to succeed. Seapine
Software is very excited to be partnering with CAHA to put S.T.O.P. patches on the backs of all player jerseys. Participation in any sport brings an element of danger. In ice hockey, the
S.T.O.P. program reinforces proper body contact, making the sport safer and more enjoyable for all players.'s8221;
Riccetti adds that participation in ice hockey is rapidly growing throughout the region. He encourages local corporations to join Seapine in assisting local hockey programs through
sponsorship of S.T.O.P. and other initiatives.
