New Milford Youth Hockey and Washington Gunnery Hockey and Skating Association are pleased to announce the combination of their youth hockey and skating programs. Reflecting its regional
status, the combined organization will be known as the NorthWestern Connecticut Youth Hockey and Skating Association (NWCYHSA). Over 250 boys and girls ages four to sixteen will skate and
play hockey at Washington's8217;s Gunnery School and New Milford's8217;s Canterbury School.
's8220;The presence of a more vibrant youth hockey and skating program will provide a place for any boy or girl who wants to play, regardless of ability, right in our local
communities,'s8221; noted NorthWestern's8217;s new President Dave Kirkwood. He continued by saying 's8220;another driving factor for the merger was to create a girls's8217; hockey
program, a first for either program. We will skate two girls's8217; teams (U-12 and U-16) this upcoming season. The demand for girls's8217; ice hockey is growing nationally and we see
that demand here in our area.'s8221;
NorthWestern's8217;s Vice President Steve Smith is equally pleased with the prospects for the upcoming 2006/07 season. 's8220;I am excited that we can offer a more vibrant community based
program for the betterment of local children,'s8221; he said. Smith continued by saying, 's8220;we embraced this merger because it will provide more parity for children of all levels and
abilities. Hockey should be a fun, positive experience. We are fully committed to making it enjoyable for both recreational players and children who wish to play at a higher level,
competing against other programs within Connecticut.'s8221;
Kirkwood is quick to point out that, 's8220;The Gunnery School and Canterbury School have been instrumental in supporting our programs throughout the years. We look forward to the
continued support of both schools and further expanding our relationship with them for the betterment of so many children.'s8221; Smith added, 's8220;We's8217;ve found both The Gunnery
School and Canterbury School truly care for and support the development of our youth. It's8217;s refreshing to know that the leadership of these schools understand and support our
mission.'s8221;
Kirkwood also stated, 's8220;We are committed to developing each and every child. As such, we have secured a nationally recognized power skating coach, Sergey Tartykov, to offer skating
clinics to our members.'s8221; Tartykov is a former Russian Olympic athlete who has pioneered the Russian Skating System. Tartykov has also been the head skating coach for the Minnesota
Wild, of the NHL, for the past four seasons.
NorthWestern Connecticut Youth Hockey is a member of the Connecticut Hockey Conference and USA Hockey. Over twelve (12) boys's8217; and girls's8217; travel teams will compete throughout
the State of Connecticut at all skill levels, from ages six through sixteen. Other teams will compete in a vibrant and ever expanding in-house program. An extensive learn-to-skate program
will be available at an exceptional value. Children from age three and up will have the opportunity to learn to skate and play hockey in a fun-filled environment.
