Parent Gets Roped Into Managing Hockey Team But Gets Untangled With...

October 11, 2004 - To help streamline hockey management's overwhelming administrative responsibilities, The Hockey Source has created its unique Team Management System (TMS).

Minor hockey coaches and managers do not coach and manage for the love of the paperwork. It is the love of the game that keeps these dedicated volunteers going. On average, for every 1 hour of practicing in the rink, 2 hours are spent sitting behind a desk or at a kitchen table focusing on seemingly endless paperwork, meetings; and, of course, the inevitable and vital fundraising.

The reality for most minor hockey teams is that if there is no fundraising, there are enormous cheques to be written by parents, and certainly no extras like new equipment or trips, unless parents pay. TMS is also designed to teach coaches, managers and volunteers about strategic planning and maximizing fundraising efforts.

"The better communication made my life a lot less stressful," states Anna Lupo, a hockey mom that lived a season of the Team Management System. "And due to the better fundraising efforts, at the end of our season we saw 30% of the registration fees go back to the parents."

By simplifying everyone's role, creating clear communication channels, and saving time, everyone involved can focus on what's really important, the game. The purpose of The Hockey Source is to better the game by bettering the people.

"Outside of my regular full-time day job, it was another 30-hour a week job for me to administer a team. The coach and I were responsible for everything from the budget to the travel itinerary," states The Hockey Source spokesperson, Jack Ray. "In minor hockey today many people are roped into doing some of these tasks, but because they have no idea where to begin, they quickly become overwhelmed. The purpose of TMS is to give team managers a step by step advantage while putting back the fun."

And because no two teams are exactly alike, The Hockey Source will provide a free consultation with one of its specialists for those that decide to purchase and use TMS. The program is tailored to fit every team's individual needs allowing them to better plan, manage, and execute a great off the ice game plan.
