What did the World Cup mean
After watching all the worlds, well some of the world's, best showcase their talents at the World cup this year, it became known as to why the NHL has it's problems. The talent it too
spread out. To see the likes of Kovalev, Kovalchuk, Yashin, Gaborik, Hossa, Satan, Forsberg, Nslund, Sundin, and Zetterberg not only on the same team but in some cases on the same lines.
That doesn't even include lines like Lemieux, Sakic and Iginla. The level of play was far greater than most NHL games. To compare it best, you would have to say it was like watching some
all-star games but include the hitting and real competitiveness of the nationalism.
For the players, especially the ones not in the nhl, these games meant something to them, but not as we look back it might have meant a lot more to the rest of the players also. Now that
the NHL had locked out the players until they, and the players union, can come to terms on a new collective bargaining agreement, it doesn't look like it will happen any time soon. Just
seeing this level of play and the true passion that the teams had just shows what is possible if the talent around the NHL wasn't so diluted.
Also shown in this tournament was the fact that the holding and grabbing has had the most influence on the lack of scoring. Some of the recent proposed solutions to correct this issue
have to remove the red line, shrink goalie equipment and to change other elements of the game. But if you look real close to the world cup games you will see that there were more chances
and the penalties were called a lot more close than in the regular nhl games. It would not hurt the game to bring goalie equipment back down to earth and also open up the game by removing
the red line, but if they would just enforce one simple rule that is already in place, as to which just not allow a player to impede another player when he doesn't have possession of the
puck. This not only allows for more scoring chances but will enable for GMs to distinguish between stars and the role players, so that guys like bobby holik aren't paid more than true
stars like marcus nasland.
