Shortly after Kordestani's daughter Ayla was born prematurely at Cedars-Sinai, she was placed into an incubator in the neonatal ICU, where she remained for two months. While Ayla remained in the ICU unit, Kordestani was inspired to create a magical and visually stimulating room for Ayla when she came home.
That is when Kordestani's dcor company -- called Joo Joo Baby -- was born. Now she has decided to donate a series of bright Joo Joo Baby designer panels to Cedars-Sinai in hopes they may provide some cheerful imagery for other parents, patients and visitors during their often stressful hospital experiences.
"Ayla's natural curiosity and sense of wonder inspired my dcor company," Kordestani says. "I hope these panels create a beautiful vision for Cedars. We named the decor company after our nickname for Ayla, since joo joo means baby bird and birds bring unexpected beauty wherever they go. Because of my career as a graphic designer, I had a distinct vision of what would brighten up the ICU experience. I wanted to help decorate the unit with our dcor which is modern, colorful, and stimulating."
According to Kordestani, because the installation is occurring in a hospital, the panels have to be safe and environmentally gentle. She is proud that the panels have met the safety requirements of Cedars' infectious disease department, as they are made from safe, lightweight, non-toxic foam with vibrant glossy graphics on top.
"They're also easy to install and to keep clean," she adds, "which is a big plus for busy parents like me."
Kordestani selected a distinct series of panels -- which are available for purchase and which can also be customized with personal photos -- to install at the hospital. A portion of the proceeds from every sale will be donated to benefit Cedars-Sinai's Good Beginnings organization, the support group for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (www.goodbeginnings-csmc.org). Good Beginnings promotes and advances the care of newborn infants at Cedars-Sinai and provides an array of outreach services, resources and programs to benefit both families and NICU staff free of charge.
"Joo Joo Baby panels are unique and resemble nothing else on the market," Kordestani says. "They can truly create a beautiful vision for your child's wall, too. They are designs that do good and celebrate the hope and joy that babies bring to our lives."
Kordestani herself will soon be adding more joy to her life. She is expecting her second child this September. Her child, of course, will be born at Cedars-Sinai.
