PEARL Protected®, creators of the patented Permanent Escape And Rescue Ladder (PEARL®) for two and three-story homes,
today reports that the metro-Atlanta area is integrating permanent fire escape ladders into local homes more aggressively and extensively than any other area in the country. With the help
of municipal fire departments, homebuilders, building supply dealers and retailers, permanent escape ladders like PEARL are becoming a standard feature in many new area homes.
Additionally, the region is home to the first U.S. city to require permanent escape ladders in all new multi-story homes. To further understand the benefits of permanent escape ladders,
area residents are invited to see a live demonstration of the PEARL ladder at the Atlanta Home Show (April 12th-15th, Georgia World Congress Center, Booth #311).
Currently, more than 12 local homebuilders and building supply dealers offer PEARL as a standard feature or upgrade option in new two and three story homes. These pioneers are responsible
for building hundreds of homes in many of the region'ss fastest-growing neighborhoods every year. In 2006, the City of East Point became the first city in the country to pass an ordinance
requiring permanent escape ladders in all new multi-story residences. Metro-Atlanta is also home to the first retail location to sell PEARL directly to consumers, Intown Ace Hardware in
Decatur.
When it comes to residential fire safety, metro-Atlanta is a model for every city in America. We have a powerful collaboration between citizens, government officials and homebuilders to
reduce the injuries and deaths caused by home fires. As a result, permanent escape ladders are becoming the new face of home fire protection in this area, said David Duley, CEO, PEARL
Protected.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 16,000 people were injured or killed by
residential fires in 2005. The NFPA also reports that more Americans died in fire-related tragedies than all other natural disasters combined. Many of these casualties are the direct
result of not being able to escape from upper-story bedrooms. According to a recent online survey, there are several residential fire safety misconceptions that may contribute to this
high casualty rate:
> Nearly 20 percent of the 500 homeowners surveyed believe they have between four and five minutes to escape from their home once a smoke alarm sounds. NFPA reports that the amount of
time is actually three minutes or less.
> Barely half of respondents (53 percent) have a fire escape plan for their home. A meager 15 percent actually practice their plan on an annual basis.
> While only eight percent of respondents have been in a fire, 36 percent know a friend, family or co-worker who has experienced a house fire. Of this group of respondents, six percent
know someone personally who has died or has been injured.
