Dorme Selected for Prestigious San Francisco International Film Fest...

Sylvia Binsfeld'ss short film Dorme (Sleep) - selected for competition in the esteemed San Francisco International Film Festival (Up, Up & Away shorts collection) as well as Robert de Niro'ss taste-making Tribeca Film Festival - is a stylistic, sensuous, 7-minute fantasy that sweeps viewers away into a world of music, beauty and wonder.

A resident of Petaluma with both commercial and film credits to her resume, Binsfeld shot Dorme on Super 35 mm film. She designed her shots precisely for adding approximately 100 digital effects. In postproduction, Binsfeld worked closely, shot for shot, with master digital effects artist Steve Wright, whose credits include Spy Kids 3D, Ray, Ali, Batman & Robin and Traffic.

As a senior visual effects artist with production experience on over 60 feature films, Wright says he was quite taken with Binsfeld'ss cinematic prowess. I was deeply impressed not only with Sylvia'ss ability to produce and direct high end visual effects on a limited budget, but also with her unique creative vision and gift for storytelling. She really should be directing big budget commercials - where she is sure to achieve spectacular results.

Sixty-four of the 65 shots in Dorme have composites and digital effects, including 3D animation, digital matte painting, greenscreen compositing and multi-plane compositing. One particularly complex shot is comprised of 14 effect layers along with additional embellishments, such as lantern glow with inter-active light. The camera goes over rooftops and comes across a boy walking through toys and a star field.

According to Binsfeld, My inspiration for Dorme came after being enchanted by the Brazilian lullaby of the same name, composed by the multiple platinum-winning musician, Arnaldo Antunes. While I listened, the mesmerizing melody brought back memories of my childhood imagination, and the visuals and story started to evolve. The song also stirred my fascination with the power of our subconscious minds and the world of dreams; that mysterious place our spirits go to play when our bodies sleep at night. I set out to create a playful romp in dreamland, rich in clever symbolisms.

The short resonates with all people of all ages. Says Roberta Marie Munroe, former short programmer for the Sundance Film Festival: Binsfeld has gone beyond the average children'ss story, creating a sparkling, fantastical drama for all ages.

In addition to San Francisco International and Tribeca in New York, Dorme will screen this month at festivals in San Diego, Reno and Danville. The film played to a packed audience and was met with critical acclaim at San Jose'ss Cinequest in March, another one of the largest and most influential film festivals featuring new film makers.

Binsfeld is known for her directorial versatility, hitting both humorous beats and emotional chords. She produced numerous commercials for Bay Area clients, including the sensual My Boudoir lingerie spot, and the comical Fall'sn Angel auto body spot, winning her a first place Telly award. Binsfeld directed and starred in the noir short, Hot Winter Night, which heated up the 2003 international festival circuit.
