Heartworm CD by Merial Offers Unique Approach to Managing this Deadly...

Merial today announced the availability of an educational CD for veterinarians that presents a novel approach to understanding the complex subject of heartworm prevention and treatment in dogs. Launched at the North American Veterinary Conference in Orlando, the CD, complete with animation and graphics, brings the concepts of heartworm infection and management to life, and provides veterinarians with a new way to look at a disease that remains a threat to most dogs in the United States.

What'ss unique about this CD is that it provides a dynamic view of the interaction of heartworm development within a dog and the outcomes of treatment and prevention, using different case scenarios frequently seen in practice, said Mike Murray, DVM, technical director for US Pets Parasiticides at Merial. We think this will be a highly useful tool for veterinarians to re-familiarize themselves with the many facts about heartworm biology and prevention, and further demonstrate - through illustrations and animations - why certain outcomes can occur based on the expected efficacy of treatment protocols.

Developed in partnership with Lifelearn Inc. and with collaboration from some of the nation'ss top veterinary parasitologists and cardiologists, this non-branded CD-ROM titled Heartworm Infection, Prevention and Treatment gives veterinarians a novel approach to understanding some of the perplexing issues they deal with when it comes to managing heartworm infection, such as: Why is a dog heartworm positive after adulticide treatment and monthly preventive Why is a dog heartworm positive after monthly preventive What are the expectations for microfilaricidal treatment outcomes

There is still a significant amount of uncertainty on the complex topic of heartworm among veterinarians, said Dr. John McCall, Professor Emeritus of Parasitology at the University of Georgia, School of Veterinary Medicine. The CD is based on prevalent questions veterinarians often ask about heartworm infection, it directly addresses issues that are important to them.

The CD also includes a review of the heartworm lifecycle, with specific emphasis on the progression and composition of heartworm developmental stages that can be present in a dog throughout the year.

The information is very thorough and is provided in a user-friendly format that is ideal for busy clinics, says Dr. Sheldon Rubin, president of the American Heartworm Society. Not only is this a great practical tool for practicing veterinarians, but it'ss an ideal tool for educators, Dr. Rubin adds.

In addition, a Resources section on the CD contains product labels and the American Heartworm Association 2005 Canine Guidelines. Heartworm Infection, Prevention and Treatment will be available from Merial field veterinarians and sales representatives in 2009.
