Pageflakes Releases Mini Word and Mini Outlook

Pageflakes, a leading player in the rapidly-growing personalized startpage space, today announced that it has extended its suite of productivity widgets by adding a calendar and a word-processing application. With the addition of the new widgets, Pageflakes now offers a web-based counterpart for most office applications.

The new calendar widget - or flake, as the company calls it - gives users a convenient way to manage their calendar online. The new Notepad Flake offers a rich-text editor which lets users create, save and print documents. The two new flakes complement Pageflakes's existing Address Book Flake, Mail Flake and To-Do-List Flake. Taken together, Pageflakes users can now access their contacts, calendar, tasks, documents and emails from any computer. What'ss particularly compelling is that users can put these flakes on a shared page which they use together with their friends or family.

Setting up a family address book or calendar online has never been easier, said Christoph Janz, co-founder and CEO of Pageflakes. Janz conceded that traditional office suites like MS Office* are still way more sophisticated, saying that in most cases the online applications would be a complement rather than a full replacement.

Richard MacManus, who frequently covers the online office space on his influential blog Read/WriteWeb, wrote recently: Think of a start page as like an Intranet dashboard, where you have the documents and files you use regularly either open - or a click away - in your dashboard.
