According to The Washingtonian Web site, the "Top Doctor's" on this list were chosen by approximately 1,250 physicians who responded to a questionnaire asking them to which doctors they would refer their family members. The judging physicians chose the best doctors in about 36 categories. These categories include two new categories, breast cancer surgery and hand surgery, which were both added this year.
According to The Washingtonian Web site, the judging physicians are also supposed to choose, in their opinion, the best pediatric doctors, for most of the original 36 categories, as well. The online version of The Washingtonian's "Top Doctors" list also includes the following information about the doctors: office addresses, phone numbers, abbreviations of the hospitals that they might work with, insurance plans that they might accept and any other possible medical specialties that the doctor might possess.
