With 30 chapters the viewer can navigate the subject areas quickly. Some of the subjects usually left out of other video's, such as: "Deciding if you'd like to build your muzzleloader from a kit;" and, "Casting your own bullets" are included.
Here the beginner gets to see how complicated plum browning or blueing a barrel can be. The person not too familiar with kits gets an idea of the labor required to sand, rasp, stain and otherwise prepare a stock. And, of course, everyone gets to realize the joy of assembling a rifle they've worked on themselves.
The casting bullets section goes into depth on safely using lead. A source of lead that should never be used is covered. And the novice can see how easy it is to cast bullets.
Accessories are covered as they are needed which makes understanding their use easy. A small cannon helps demonstrate the differences between black powder and Pyrodex. And tips are given on "just what you need to take with you out into the field."
Basics a viewer needs to know, like how rifle twist affects round balls and conicals, and the importance of eye and ear protection, are discussed and where applicable demonstrated. Plus, animated segments demonstrate dangerous situations that the viewer can avoid.
Though essentially covering side-eared and inline percussion guns, most of the material applies equally well to flintlocks and muskets. However, only percussion ignition is demonstrated in the video.
At one hour and 11 minutes, this DVD does not waste time with hunting segment fillers. Every minute is used to impart the knowledge a beginner needs for a safe and enjoyable muzzleloading experience.
