In an ongoing effort to provide todays deer hunter with quality products and exclusive informationals, Deerfever has revamped and overhauled it's entire website.
Website owner, James L. Bruner, an outdoorsman, webmaster, and author, spoke in terms of consideration and personal experience in regards to the major facelift and work involved in
restructuring the domain.
"What we find is exactly what everyone else finds when they search for deer hunting information. The same old articles are re-hashed and re-distributed to syndicated websites who are in
need of content. We know. Thats exactly how we began several years ago and hardly anything has changed for most webmasters since then."
In essence the domain does project a domineering and authoriative structure. In fact visually it is nearly overwhelming until you begin to focus on your intended subject. "We've stripped
away all the years of dependancy by removing categorical authors. We are not trying to make a public statement that these authors were not qualified nor competent. We simply view the
entire project as an in-house referendum filled with exclusive material which has been written by qualified individuals," comments Mr. Bruner. "We will still allow a percentage of
articles to be submitted by individual guests, and members, but, the true writing team will be the main benchmark for which we will build a wider platform and plant a firm foothold."
We learned that in the previous weeks all work was performed in stages which consisted of three different levels.
The first was the daunting task of replacing all the product items. During this time DeerFever had aligned themselves with outdoor product giant Cabelas through an affiliate process. This
allowed a real-time enviroment in which products would be added or deleted through script inclusion which reflected availability of each product and current pricing. In total the product
number available through DeerFever was well over 7,000 items specifically designated for deer hunting and shooting. Those numbers will fluctuate during peak buying seasons when stock
numbers rise to accomodate the influx of new products.
Phase two of the build resulted in writing new material targeted towards deer hunting. Older articles were re-written and many new articles were brought to the forefront. Subjects varied
to tackle some areas that have seen very minimal exposure in the past. Bruner claims, "We know these people are hungry for something new and refreshing and we plan to take that task right
to our keyboards."
The third and final stage consisted of visual and interactive design concepts. "I am a firm believer that people aren't looking for the fanciest website and an emphasis on graphics can
really burden your load times."We strive to drop as much information in your lap as quickly as possible." Bruner also explains that, "Although we were adamant about load times we also
wanted a new look for the site. We spent a reasonable amount of time making changes to simple graphic replacements and working with color nodes to achieve the final result. We're happy to
say it hasnt affected the load times at all and the end result is much cleaner."
Apparently there was also a community aspect involved with this re-work as we noticed new menus and interactive features which have been created for registered users. "We did touch on the
interactive issue but our main blueprint was product and material." Bruner notes that although the domain is mainly shopping and information, they wanted to provide the hunting community
with specific areas where interaction would help promote the outdoors through extended exposure. "Although our tagline is Get the Knowledge - Grab the Gear, we still feel a need to give
our visitors a place to hang their hat for a while and get involved." Recent community additions have included the opportunity for registered members to create and maintain their own
blogs within the domain as well as a photo gallery and a help desk where members can track their questions or requests as they progress through the system.
"We look forward to members making use of the blogs we are offering especially for those who like to document their hunting or scouting trips. If you're a registered member simply sign-in
and follow the links to create your own blog." Mr. Bruner also noted that although the blogs will be supervised by a system administrator, there are relatively few stipulations on content
but the main intent was for outdoor material.
Future plans for the website have been dated and earmarked but further acknowledgements had not been created for public announcement.
