GLOCK Inc Introduces the New 45 GAP Trio

March 1, 2005 -- The .45 G.A.P. Trio is made up of the GLOCK 37 and the newly released GLOCK 38 and GLOCK 39 making their official debut at the Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show in Las Vegas in January 2005.

Renowned for its safety, accuracy, reliability, durability, and ease of use GLOCKs proven Safe Action technology has now been applied to the .45 G.A.P. Trio. The result should come as no surprise: The GLOCK system makes shooting each model of the high-performance .45 G.A.P. Trio a pleasure to handle!

Built On Standard Receivers

The GLOCK 38 and 39 are almost duplicates of existing compact and subcompact models, for they are built on the current standard compact and subcompact receivers. What changes, if any, have been made Starting with the receiver, the current dog leg .45 caliber ejector has been used, as has the extended slide stop lever.

In addition, the redesigned trigger bar of the G37 has been used in the new GLOCK 38 and 39. Other than these, the rest of the parts are common to all standard GLOCKS, with the G38 having light rails which, of course, accept all GLOCK Safe Action Tactical Lights. The G39 does not have the light rails.

The slides of both are but shortened versions of the GLOCK 37. This means they are slightly heavier and of increased dimensions compared to the GLOCK standard-sized slides. The G37 firing pin safety and striker have been continued in this new family of .45 G.A.P. pistols. GLOCK sights (as well as others)standard, tritium and adjustablewill fit the slides, which also share the same beveled lower edges that allow the enlarged slide to nicely blend into the receiver beneath.

About the Magazines

As to Glock magazines, the GLOCK 38 holds eight and the G39 six rounds in a semi-staggered columnsimply shorter versions of the GLOCK 37 magazine. The longer G37 magazine can also be used in the other two models.

How They Handle and Shoot

Since the .45 G.A.P. cartridge operates at lower pressures than the .40 and the .357, a reduction in recoil is felt in these new pistols. Or, perhaps better put, the shooter should experience more push than snap when firing.

The .45 G.A.P. cartridge is now available from CCI 45 GAP and Federal 45 GAP who now offer the following: CCI Gold Dot 185- and 200-grain Gold Dot HP and Lawman 185- and 200-grain FMJ. Federal has the same HP and FMJ bullet weights. Velocities all run from 950 to 1020 feet-per-second. Winchester 230-grain JRN, JHP, RANGER SXT and WINCLEAN Ammo, as well as 185-grain Silvertip II, along with a 175-grain Sinterfire-brand (frangible) load. Velocities run from around 840 to 870 fps, plus or minus. What is significant is that all these loads have replicated the same loads as are present in the companies .45 ACP ammunition.

Comparisons of shootability such as felt-recoil and how well they conceal come to mind as a way of understanding how the pistols may perform, as well as comparing them to existing pistols such as the 1911s of similar size and weightthe Lightweight Commander and Officers Model, for instance. For magazine capacity, the edge goes to the GLOCK 38, eight over seven, if a standard-capacity 1911 magazine is viewed. The 1911 magazine can be increased one round by using a different magazine spring and follower, of course, but the GLOCK pistols can also gain one round by adding the Plus base plate. By doing this, the 1911 has been very susceptible to increased malfunctions, while the GLOCK pistols do not have this proclivity. The GLOCK 39 remains even-up with the short-frame 1911s and both can also gain one round with the aforementioned magazine modifications.

The .45 G.A.P. cartridge may well be more accurate than the .45 ACP! This observation is supported by the following information from a military marksmanship unit that had done their own accuracy testing of the .45 G.A.P. using a machine-rest-mounted 5-inch test barrel. Their groups were 2.73 edge-to-edge (rather than the standard center-to-center measuring) for 30 rounds at 50 yards using Winchester 230-grain JHP!

Like all GLOCK Safe Action Pistols, all .45 G.A.P. pistols are shipped with a locking device. The lock is included to promote and facilitate safe home storage.

The new GLOCK .45 G.A.P Trio will again change what shooters have come to expect from a stock pistol and further blurs the line between out-of-the-box stock pistols and expensive custom pistols.
