As big companies like General Electric, Siemens and Veolia Environment strive to bring clean water to the world, small companies as Puretec Industrial Water have been doing it for years.

Puretec Industrial Water is an Oxnard California based company that provides equipment that can provide highly filtered water to companies, and has seen a 34 percent growth in business in the past year as drug makers and biotech firms, soft drink and food companies and other kinds of industry have raised purity standards for the water used in processes.

Puretec is able to meet the purity standards met by the industry by using membranes, activated carbon filters and ion transfers to remove impurities in water.

"General Electric found that impurities damaged turbine blades and reduced output. So G.E. demanded purer water and raised standards for the whole industry," says Jim Harris, the owner and president of Puretec. "We rent or sell customers tanks of purifying resins and then pick up and replenish the tanks. It's a service business and therefore has great stability."

Puretec Industrial Water was founded in 1965, when Harris started an industrial division of his father and grandfather's water business, a franchise of Culligan water softeners that removed minerals from local water to make tap water taste better, in order to be able to offer purer water to semiconductor companies who were demanding pure water for their processes.
