Vissumo, a subsidiary of QSI Corporation, has introduced a major innovation in touch technologies for human/computer interfaces. The company'ss new force panel technology allows designers and architects to create touch panels that are durable and beautiful for indoor and outdoor applications, removing the constraints of design, durability and implementation of current technologies.
The name Vissumo is derived from the Latin word vis meaning force. Unlike other touch screen technologies, Vissumo touch panels use the force of a person'ss touch to determine location. A
system of four sensors in the corners of a rigid panel will sense the force of a touch anywhere on its surface. Proprietary technology then accurately computes the X and Y coordinates of
the touch point.
Touch panels based on Vissumo'ss technology can be manufactured from any rigid material or any combination of materials such as glass, metal, plastic, stone, and wood. Unlike other
products on the market, Vissumo touch panels can contain raised or irregular elements in any size and shape and can use off-screen touch areas. The surface can also include attachments
such as buttons or raised Braille lettering and can be drilled with holes for speakers or slots for card readers.
Vissumo'ss unique characteristics open new possibilities for the design and implementation of touch panels. They are the ideal solution for unattended applications or outdoor environments
exposed to weather conditions such as rain, snow and mud. Panels can be made of natural materials such as slate, marble, and hardwoods. They can also help meet energy conservation and
environmental specifications by incorporating eco-friendly materials such as bamboo, resins, and recycled composites.
Vissumo was recently formed to market technology developed in the research lab at parent company QSI Corporation, a leading manufacturer of rugged terminals for industrial OEMs and
commercial vehicle systems integrators. This is the most exciting development in touch technology in a decade, said Jim Elwell, Chairman and CEO of Vissumo and QSI Corporation. Imagine
touching a slab of polished marble in a hotel lobby to call an elevator, or pressing a display of wood, glass and stone at an information kiosk in a museum or art gallery, or even outside
exposed to rain and snow. The aesthetic possibilities are limited only by a designer'ss imagination.
Garrick Infanger, President of Vissumo commented Our company identity and brand name capture the excitement we bring to touch technology applications. The market for touch technology is
expected to double in the next five years. We are positioning Vissumo to become a major player in the marketplace.
