December 20, 2004 -- A long-term study presented at the American Academy of Otolaryngology has revealed that temperature-controlled radiofrequency ablation of the tonsils are a safe and
effective method of treating chronic tonsillitis, including infections occurring after complications of tonsillitis. It is also effective is reducing the size of enlarged tonsils which
can result in sleep-disordered breathing and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.
Patients have a rapid recovery and the risk of post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage which is reported to be between 3-10% of excisional tonsillectomies, is negligible with this technique.
Additionally, post-treatment pain is significantly reduced compared to standard tonsillectomy techniques, and overall recurrence rate requiring retreatment is less than 2% over 5
years.
