Podcast Targets Mobile Learning with iPhone App

The Psych Files podcast, a top ten podcast in the iTunes Higher Education list (with over a million downloads), released an iPhone application designed specifically for high school and college students. The application, entitled BrainNmonX (the title is a mnemonic for Brain Mnemonics), uses the keyword mnemonic technique to create crazy and memorable images to help students memorize the functions of parts of the brain - one of the tasks psychology students often find difficult.

Memorizing the parts of the brain is always a challenge and mnemonic devices can give a student a big advantage says Britt. The hardest brain part to create a mnemonic for was the hypothalamus, but when I came up with an image of a group of llamas being fed through a hypo (hypo-the-llamas) I thought that image might be just wacky enough to be memorable. That image, along with another in which Sigmund Freud is pictured literally tearing his pants off, have lead to a lot of sales and positive feedback from students and teachers alike.

I'sve been selling the mnemonics on my website, but the iPhone is the perfect device for a product like this. says Britt. Mobile devices and iPhone apps like BrainNmonX are ideal for test preparation because while students may not have a computer or may not have it handy, they'sve always got their cell phone to study on-the-go or do a last minute review before a test.

The popular Psych Files podcast (www.ThePsychFiles.com) has been providing students with free educational episodes for over 2 years and will no doubt be a source of innovative mobile learning apps in the future.
