EvidenceBased Medicine and PointofCare Testing Advantages for Internists Managing Cardiovascular Disease

Internists are at the point-of-care frontline in cardiovascular disease (CVD) management. Best-practice diagnosis and treatment of hypertension, atherosclerosis, and heart failure is vital to patient quality-of-care and -life outcomes. A return to evidence-based medicine and point-of-care testing significantly improve supervision efficiency and patient satisfaction, however time constraints, complex care networks, and complicated trial findings hinder success. ''Managing CVD: What Every Internist Needs to Know'' is designed to deliver an optimized, accredited review of today's guidelines and tools.

CVD causes one in every five US deaths. With an expanding array of tests and drugs to identify and treat hypertension, lipid metabolism disorders, cardiac dysrhythmias, ischemic heart disease, even nutritional shortcomings, a strong continuing education -- including a comparative view of solution mechanism, efficacy, and side effects -- is necessary to ensure safe and effective patient care. Four physicians, leaders in CVD clinical research, program development, and education, will present.

Speaker Benjamin J. Ansell, MD, FACP, FACC, Associate Professor, Medicine / Cardiology, and Co-Director, Cholesterol, Hypertension and Atherosclerosis Management Program, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, stated "The key lesson of recent cholesterol clinical trials is only partly that we should be treating to lower LDL targets; as important is evaluating a variety of different non-lipid risk factors in determining patients appropriate for medical therapy."

"Charged with overseeing hypertensive patient care, internists must navigate a multitude of treatment possibilities and directives. We'll review the most current clinical information, including from potentially guideline-changing blood-pressure studies only recently presented in the field," said Michael J. Bloch, MD, Associate Professor, Internal Medicine and Cardiology, University of Nevada School of Medicine, and Medical Director, St. Mary's Risk Reduction Center, Reno.

Peter A. McCullough, MD, MPH, FACC, Consultant Cardiologist and Chief, Nutrition and Preventative Medicine, William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan, noted "The program will arm internists with a unique and fresh grasp of heart failure in association with obesity, hypertension, and coronary artery disease."

"Highly beneficial, anticoagulants also rank in the top three reasons for an emergency-room trip by patients over 65; with FDA priority of anticoagulant initiatives, internists must be at the forefront of treatment understanding," said John 'Jack' Voytas, MD, CMD, FACP, Head, Research and Program Development, Geriatric Medicine, William Beaumont Hospital, and Medical Director, Woodward Hills Nursing Center, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

"Internists are acutely aware of the cardiovascular disease management imperative," said Laura McCaskill, President and CEO, MEDAVERA, Inc., co-sponsor of the program. "We are fortunate this group of physicians is willing to deliver expertise and insight. Together, they represent the best in clinical and practical work."

"Managing CVD" will occur the evening of May 14, 2008 at the Renaissance Grand Ballroom North in Washington, DC. Individuals attending are eligible for Continuing Medical Education credits through Educational Review Systems, Inc. More information, including registration information, is available at www.managingcvd.com.

"Managing CVD" is jointly sponsored by MEDAVERA and Educational Review Systems, with unrestricted educational grant support from Biosite, Cholestech, Hemosense, and Inverness Medical Innovations. The program parallels, although is not part of the official program of, the American College of Physicians' "Internal Medicine 2008."
