Orthopedic Surgeon Blasts Vioxx and COX2 Inhibitors

October 21, 2004 -- A Toronto-based medical doctor, and orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Kamille Ramsundar, blasted Merck & Co's Vioxx and the entire class of COX-2 inhibitors, including Celebrex, in a taped telephone interview with StockInterview.com. Dr. Ramsundar said, "Vioxx is a medication that I knew all along that would have given, and would have had, problems. All of the clinical studies have shown that it affects the renal area. As I have indicated previously, it is something very close to my heart because I had a lost a parent, who used Vioxx extensively. Even with all the warnings, it was still prescribed to him. He took it. The immediate relief was there, but the long term impact on the body itself and the renal system was irreversible... Vioxx is not going to come back on the market right away. It will take quite a few years."



Dr. Ramsundar, also with the Canadian Institute of Orthopaedics, also criticized Pfizer's Celebrex, saying: "I feel very much the same way about Celebrex as I feel about Vioxx. All of the questions that are being asked right now are the same questions of Vioxx. What are the symptoms Nobody seems to be able to tell you. What is the long-term impact I think we all know what that impact will be. It does affect the renal system."
