FJMC to Provide 13000 in Youth Scholarships Through Yom HaShoah Yellow...

The Federation of Jewish Men's8217;s Clubs announced it will make $13,000 available for the From Darkness Into Light scholarships for members of United Synagogue Youth. The money, which will be used to finance a USY trip to Poland and Israel, was generated through the sale of some 175,000 candles in the FJMC's8217;s Yom HaShoah Yellow Candle's8482; Program, which commemorates the lives of six million Jews killed during the Holocaust. USY's8217;ers who belong to a synagogue that participates in the FJMC program are eligible for this scholarship.

's8220;The Holocaust continues to be a defining moment in Jewish history and in the history of the world in the last 65 years,'s8221; said Steve Lessman, chairman of the FJMC Yellow Candle Program. 's8220;As survivors reach the ends of their lives, the Yellow Candle becomes an important symbol in teaching Jewish children and all children about this horrific event and about the continuing need to combat bigotry and genocide wherever it occurs in the world. Lighting the Yellow Candle on Yom HaShoah can tie in with Holocaust education programs to bring history sharply into focus.'s8221;

One USY travel program for which From Darkness Into Light scholarships are used begins with a week exploring Jewish life in Poland, followed by five weeks of renewal in Israel. The week in Poland is spent discovering the history and culture of Polish Jewry, including visits to the concentration camps of Sobibor, Majdanek, Auschwitz, Birkenau, and Treblinka. The trip also includes city tours of Warsaw, Cracow, and Lublin. The group then spends five weeks of renewal exploring the length and breadth of Israel in a full Israel Pilgrimage experience. USY's8217;ers are exposed to the history and contemporary realities of Judaism and Israel, climbing the fortress of Masada, exploring the stalactite caves of Netifim, swimming in the waters of the Kinneret, praying at the Kotel, and drinking tea in a Bedouin tent on the sands of the Negev desert.

The FJMC partners with the National Federation of Temple Brotherhoods to make the Yellow Candles available in Reform synagogues and with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism in North America. The FJMC also has sent Yellow Candles to congregations, schools and Jewish organizations in Israel, Latin America and Europe. On the local level, a number of FJMC-affiliated Men's8217;s Clubs have worked with schools in their communities to sponsor Holocaust programs. Clubs also use donations from Yellow Candle distribution in their congregations to fund various Holocaust education programs in synagogue religious schools.

The Yellow Candle was conceived in 1981 by members of the Men's8217;s Club at Beth Tzedec in Toronto and further developed by the Men's8217;s Club at Ner Tamid in Peabody, MA. The Men's8217;s Club Yellow Candle is modeled after the traditional Jewish memorial candle that burns for 24 hours during periods of mourning and on the anniversary of the death of a family member. The candle'ss yellow wax and symbol depicting a Jewish star and strand of barbed wire serve to remind us of the yellow arm band which Jews were forced to wear during the Nazi regime. The photo on the candle showing youngsters departing a concentration camp emphasizes the importance of teaching our youth the lessons of the Holocaust and of remembering the Six Million.
