Math Challenge Can a Single Tool Meet Nearly all NCTM Focal Points
More than a year before the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) released its Curriculum Focal Points for PreKindergarten through Grade 8 Mathematics, MathScore's8482; was already hard at work, helping students at Bishop Elementary improve their basic math skills.
In an article published in Education Week, in September 2006, NCTM President Francis M. Skip Fennell, said that his organization has always recognized the importance of building students's ability to memorize certain basic math facts and procedures. Grade by grade, MathScore meets and often exceeds the revised standards set by the NCTM Focal Points, because MathScore was specifically designed to provide students with concrete mastery of foundational topics.
Beginning in grade 2, MathScore develops a student'ss quick recall of addition and subtraction facts through its unique ability to deliver a high volume of equations, tailored to each student'ss abilities, in a short amount of time. Step by step, MathScore improves the math skills needed for mastery of mathematics in each grade level in grades 2 through Algebra 1. MathScore gives grade 4 students quick recall of multiplication facts while grade 5 students achieve fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions.
As NCTM also recognized in its position paper The Use of Technology in the Learning and Teaching of Mathematics, technology increases both the scope of the mathematical content and the range of the problem situations that are within students's reach. Not only does MathScore'ss patent-pending technology build basic math skills for remedial students, it also allows high achievers to stretch for new mathematical concepts not yet covered by their class curriculum, achieving what many schools strive for but find difficult to accomplish in math - differentiated learning.
