Reviewers are calling Purest Democracy: Leadership and Citizenship Lessons Learned While Serving on a School Board by Gary Lister a must-read and an instant classic. Although the setting is in the area of public school governance, the lessons learned are not.
They are universally applicable; a reviewer on amazon.com says, I sat down to read just a couple of chapters of this book, but put it down only long enough to eat. This book was written from the perspective of a dedicated school board chairman from a small community. However, the lessons in this book can be applied to any kind of service group (church administrative board, service club, etc.) Many organizations have high hopes, but get bogged down and lose focus on what their mission is supposed to be. Although a lot of the tips here can be found elsewhere, it is good to be able to find them all in one place. I suspect that I will refer to it often.
Sally Zakariya, former editor-in-chief at the American School Board Journal says, Two-plus decades with the ASBJ have taught me two things: (1) School board members are an impressive but unsung bunch of public servants who make a vital contribution to public education; and (2) few of them are very good at writing about what they do. Gary Lister exemplifies the first point and is a striking exception to the second.
Lister is the chairman of the Bleckley County (Georgia) Board of Education and also the author of 99 Reasons To Never, Ever Again Run For School Board (or any other political office) that takes a definitive look at the trials and tribulations of school board service and why one should serve. Purest Democracy is available from Amazon (.com) or Borders (.com) (search on Lister school board or ISBN 978-1-4196-6761-9) and from leading bookstores nationwide.
