Live Your Dream Art Contest Open for Children KHigh School

Soroptimist, an international volunteer organization for business and professional women whose mission is to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world, invites schools to participate in its Live Your Dream Art Contest by encouraging their students to paint or draw a woman who inspires them.

The contest is open to both boys and girls, from kindergarten to 12th grade. Drawings must convey a special woman and why she inspires the student. She can be someone they know; a current or historical figure; or a fictional character. If their work is chosen as a finalist, students will have the opportunity for it to be viewed by thousands of people on the Soroptimist Live Your Dream Campaign website at LiveYourDreamCampaign.org. Winners will also receive $100, as will their schools. The contest is being sponsored in honor of International Women'ss Day and Women'ss History Month, which take place in March.

Participation in this contest will provide a unique and educational way for students to examine and celebrate the many contributions of women, which have historically been downplayed and sometimes overlooked completely, commented Soroptimist President Alice Wells, who is a former educator and school administrator. The contest would dovetail nicely with a unit on women'ss history and could coordinate across subjects. It will provide a wonderful opportunity for both boys and girls to consider how women have and continue to shape the world.

Art works will be judged in the following categories: grades K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12. Schools must collect all work from their students and send them in one package to Soroptimist, 1709 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103, Attn: LYD Art Contest. The deadline is January 31, 2009. The winner will be announced on March 8, International Women'ss Day.
